Our medical program is one of the most highly regarded degrees of its kind in Australia and is taught by experts who are passionate about a host of medical specialties. During your studies you'll master clinical sciences and a range of practical skills to prepare you for the challenges and rewards of being a doctor. The Doctor of Medicine (Ochsner) is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities expected of leading physicians. It is offered in partnership with the Ochsner Health System and is only open to US citizens and permanent residents. The program is structured in two phases: Clinical Preparation in Australia and Clinical Practice in the US. Across the program, you'll transition from studying specific cases in classes with a tutor to undertaking clinical rotations in hospitals. Clinical Preparation (years 1 and 2) combines the study of basic and clinical sciences with training in research, ethics, public health and clinical skills. You'll also complete an apprentice-style Observer ship within an Australian healthcare environment. Clinical Practice (years 3 and 4) involves undertaking different rotations primarily at the Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana. Clinical rotations include 10 core areas, including pediatrics, surgical and medical specialties, and critical care. Career outcomes MD-Ochsner graduates have a high match rate for US residency training programs. 51 out of 55 graduates who entered The Match in 2016 received residency placements – a match rate of 93 per cent. This rate rivals that of top medical schools in the US. Residencies have included: Emergency medicine, Boston University Medical Center Family medicine, NH Dartmouth General surgery, Greenville Health System Internal medicine, Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin Internal medicine, Mayo Clinic Neurology, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Neurology, Yale OBGYN, Drexel University College of Medicine Pediatrics, LSU New Orleans Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School Urology, anesthesiology, internal medicine, medicine preliminary, and orthopedics, Ochsner Medical Center Graduates also qualify for medical practice in Australia and can apply for state or territory internships. In Australia, an internship is completed in the first year immediately after graduating from medical school. After a new doctor completes their internship, they are eligible for General Registration and can begin a residency. Australian residencies typically last for between one and three years, and involve a period of research or further training, in order to qualify for specialist training.
