Our medical program is one of the most highly regarded degrees of its kind in Australia and is taught by experts who are passionate about a host of medical specialties. During your studies you'll master clinical sciences and a range of practical skills, to be prepared for the challenges and rewards of being a doctor. The Doctor of Medicine is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities expected of leading junior doctors. There are two entry pathways: Provisional Entry (for school leavers) or Direct Entry (for university graduates).The program is structured in two phases: Clinical Preparation and Clinical Practice. Across the program, you'll transition from studying specific cases in classes with a tutor to undertaking clinical rotations in hospitals. Clinical Preparation (years 1 and 2) combines the study of basic and clinical sciences with training in research, ethics, public health and clinical skills. You'll also complete an apprentice-style Observer ship to gain insight into life as a doctor. Clinical Practice (years 3 and 4) involves undertaking rotations at a clinical school. Each clinical rotation is eight-weeks long. There are three Clinical Schools: one in Brisbane, one involving units across rural Queensland, and one in New Orleans, Louisiana. Career outcomes Graduates of the Doctor of Medicine program are eligible to transition from Student Registration to Provisional Registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Graduates must apply for Provisional Registration in order to undertake a one-year Internship. An Internship is completed the first year after you graduate. Queensland Health is the only provider of intern training in Queensland. Once you've completed an Internship, you're eligible for General Registration and you can begin a Residency. A Residency typically lasts for between one and three years, and involves a period of research, or further training, so you can qualify for specialist training. Once fully qualified, medical practitioners may work in: Private practice Hospitals Public health Academia or teaching Research Aid organisations Defence forces. Areas of specialist practice include: Addiction medicine Anaesthesia Dermatology Emergency medicine General practice (including Rural Generalist and Rural and Remote General Practice) Intensive care medicine Medical administration Obstetrics and gynaecology Occupational and environmental medicine Ophthalmology Paediatrics and child health Pain medicine Palliative medicine Pathology Physician (e.g. general medicine, cardiology, geriatric medicine, gastroenterology) Psychiatry Public health medicine Radiation oncology Radiology Rehabilitation medicine Sexual health medicine Sport and exercise medicine Surgery (e.g. general surgery, neurosurgery)
