The Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture (Honours) provides students with the opportunity to pursue an independent research project within the Agronomy, Horticulture or Livestock and Poultry Science fields under the supervision of an Agronomy, Horticulture or Livestock and Poultry focused academic staff member. In addition, students will acquire skills in research methodologies, research communication and entrepreneurship which will enable them to continue into a research higher degree or move into a diverse range of employment opportunities.
Program structure
The courses offered in the Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture (Honours) are set out in the course list. Each course is allocated a certain number of units (#). A standard full-time study load is 8 units per semester. The Program Rules explain what is required to complete the Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture (Honours). Fields of study
Agronomy
Agronomy is the study of how the environment and agricultural practices can be managed to control the whole plant growth and crop production cycle. As an agronomist you will utilise a number of scientific disciplines to enhance the production of food, create healthier food, investigate plants as a future energy source and manage the environmental impacts of agriculture. You will combine the study of biological, chemical, ecological and earth sciences or genetics to examine variables such as crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, plant breeding, plant physiology, soil classification and fertility and the control of weeds, insects and other pests to manage the whole plant and crop production cycle.
Horticulture
You will study diverse areas including the intensive production of fruit, vegetable, nursery and floricultural crops; turf; and the use of plants for recreational and therapeutic benefit, or to enhance the urban landscape.
As a horticulturist you will work to improve plant yield, quality, nutritional value and resistance to insects, diseases and environmental stresses through the use of scientific techniques in plant breeding, biochemistry, physiology and propagation.
Livestock and Poultry Science
You will study a range of sciences including animal behaviour, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, health, genetics and reproduction that underpin the effective and humane production of animals for food, fibre and pharmaceuticals.
You will use the latest technologies in disease control, welfare management, animal environment interactions and product quality.
You will also study business principles and gain practical skills in applying these through industry placements to ensure the profitable and sustainable management of livestock & poultry.

Students are required to complete international equivalent to Australian Year 12 (or equivalent). Academic minimum entry requirements for international applicants vary from country to country. English language requirements: IELTS: Overall Band Score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6 in each sub-band of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening; or TOEFL (Internet-Based-iBT): Overall score 87 with a Writing score of 21 and Reading, Speaking and Listening scores of 19; or TOEFL (Paper-based): Overall score of 570 and a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) and 54 in Listening and Reading; or PTE: Overall score of 64 with 60 in each communicative skills section; or CAE/CPE: Overall Cambridge English Scale (CES) score of 176 with a minimum score of 169 in each skill; or BEP: A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills.

Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture or Bachelor of Applied Science or equivalent with a GPA of 5; and satisfied any additional requirements set by the Head of School; or satisfied the Executive Dean and Head of School that the applicant is qualified to undertake honours based on the applicant's academic records; and subject to completion of additional work if set.
