专业简介
Gain the practical and theoretical skills to help commercial farmers sustainably increase their output through innovative solutions and better use of resources.
This program will introduce you to the scientific and practical aspects of the sustainable agriculture industry. You will gain the knowledge and skill to help develop agricultural solutions to some of the issues facing our changing planet. Choose one major from three different options: Agronomy, Horticulture, or Livestock and Poultry Science. Each major is designed to give you insight into how specific agricultural practices and environmental impacts can be better balanced. Apply your knowledge and develop professional skills during an optional 120-hour placement in your third year with a host organisation in either Australia or overseas that has direct links with your chosen plan of study. Learn in world-class facilities at Gatton campus, which is home to a 1054-hectare farm, research greenhouses, nursery and tissue culture facilities, research laboratories, and the Queensland Animal Science Precinct.

Majors
Agronomy
Agronomy is the study of how the environment and agricultural practices can be managed to control the whole plant growth and crop production cycle. As an agronomist you will utilise a number of scientific disciplines to enhance the production of food, create healthier food, investigate plants as a future energy source and manage the environmental impacts of agriculture. You will combine the study of biological, chemical, ecological and earth sciences or genetics to examine variables such as crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, plant breeding, plant physiology, soil classification and fertility and the control of weeds, insects and other pests to manage the whole plant and crop production cycle.
Horticulture
Horticulturalists work to improve plant yield, quality, nutritional value and resistance to insects, diseases and environmental stresses through their knowledge of plant breeding, biochemistry, physiology and propagation. As a student in the Horticulture major, you'll study diverse areas including the intensive and sustainable production of fruit, vegetable, nursery and floricultural crops; turf; and the use of plants for recreational and therapeutic purposes, or to enhance and beautify the urban landscape.
Livestock and Poultry Science
As a student in the Livestock and Poultry Science major, you'll study a range of fields including animal behaviour, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, health, genetics and reproduction. These fields underpin the effective and humane production of animals for food, fiber and pharmaceuticals. You'll also use the latest technologies in disease control, welfare management, animal-environment interactions, and product quality. Throughout, the major emphasizes concepts and practices that are used in the sustainable management of animal enterprises in Australia.
