Research by means of creative practice is central to the graduate programs of Performing Arts, where we seek to nurture creative excellence hand in hand with intellectual rigour and excitement. The Theatre specialisation of the MFA invites students to engage in research projects focused, in a broad range of different ways, on theatrical practice or issues related to theatre, or that illuminates or expands on the medium in some way.
The majority of projects will involve research by means of the candidate’s own theatrical practice – the term ‘theatre’ in this context may be quite broadly interpreted – alongside a written dissertation, but some projects will focus on the practice of others and consist of a dissertation only.
While the School insists that MFA practice-based projects fulfil the rigorous requirements of all academic research, the nature of the practice may vary considerably from project to project (e.g. the re-direction of a pre-existing script, the creation of a devised performance, a new approach to training, and so on). The onus on the candidate is to ensure that their practice constitutes research, and that the research focus can be consciously articulated in written form.

The Master of Fine Arts provides you with the opportunity to further develop your artistic practice, and can lead to PhD study.

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.

A relevant undergraduate degree with at least H2A (75%) average and at least two years of documented work experience relevant to the stream to which entry is sought; or

At least five years of documented relevant work experience related to the stream to which entry is sought and demonstrating outstanding artistic ability, together with evidence of ability in academic writing and research or scholarship appropriate for postgraduate study

Performance in one or more of an audition, test, interview, workshop, portfolio or folio presentation, as prescribed by the Academic Board for the stream to which entry is sought
