Develop advanced research skills while studying to be an educational psychology practitioner by completing a PhD in educational psychology.
With a focus on early childhood development, learning issues, mental health, life transitions and promoting wellbeing across the lifespan, you’ll gain grounding in the theoretical, conceptual and empirical foundations of educational psychology.
Real-life learning
Gain placements in a range of settings, including: primary and secondary schools, early learning centres, colleges, clinics, hospitals, private practice and community settings.
Accreditation
Successful completion of the course qualifies graduates to practice as a registered psychologist and become a Member of the Australian Psychological Society and Associate Member of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists.

Course structure
Up to 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time
Coursework and research, comprising:
100 points of coursework in the first year (or equivalent for part time students)
150 points of further coursework throughout the final three years
1000 hours of supervised fieldwork
80,000 word PhD thesis.
Careers
Become qualified to work as an educational psychologist with expert skills in counselling, psychological assessment, research methods, intervention, group work, consultation and multidisciplinary team work. In addition, through your major research project, you will gain advanced research skills.

Many of our graduates find work in government education and health departments, and agencies treating children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Graduates with interests outside of the field of education can seek positions in clinics, hospitals and private psychological practice.

You could become a thought-leader and undertake your own research at universities in Australia and overseas.

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
