The Master of Design for Performance gives designers and visual artists gives you skills in designing scenery, props and/or costumes for live performance.
HANDS-ON, COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Learn from both theoretical and hands-on training to practice your own craft professionally. As collaboration is at the heart of design for performance, your creative ideas will develop through artistic collaborations with directors, choreographers, designers and other performance makers at the Victorian College of the Arat (VCA). Develop creative partnerships that can lead to future professional collaborations.
WORKSHOPS, CLASSES AND STUDIO-BASED LEARNING
Take on tuition and facilities to develop advanced skills in a range of 2D and 3D visualisation techniques both by hand and using new technologies. These skills are employed to document and communicate ideas, and produce graphic props and projected image on stage.
GAIN SUPPORT TO FIND INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS
Get the support to find the professional area of your choice - placements where you can observe and assist professional designers in the performing arts industry.
APPLIED PROJECT
Gain an introduction to the theory and process of designing sets and costumes for live performance. A range of approaches will be explored through considering current and historical thinking about the role of design play in live performance and applying these ideas in a series of studio-based projects.
DESIGN REALISATION AND COLLABORATION
Take on practical workshops, and group projects, developing skills in collaboration and design realisation. Collaborators may include other designers, directors, animators, choreographers and cinematographers.
DESIGN REALISATION AND COMMUNICATION
Develop the fundamental skills and techniques for documenting and communicating designs for stage and screen including, model making, concept drawing, perspective drawing, technical drawing and CAD drafting.
PERFORMANCE RESEARCH APPROACHES
Gain an understanding of historic and current performance practice, research methods, including practical experience in locating resources (local and global) for specific inquiries. Visiting practitioners will also discuss their philosophies and approach.
GRAPHICS FOR STAGE AND SCREEN
Develop skills in utilising computer-based graphics software to communicate design concepts as well as producing items for actual use including, printed properties and screen graphics.
INDUSTRY INVESTIGATION
Gain an understanding of designing in your specialist area: live performance or screen-based media. The investigation may include an internship on a professional production if this aligns with the desired outcomes of the project.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTISE AND SELF PROMOTION
Through a series of guest lectures and projects, gain a deeper understanding of the industry they are about to enter. And learn how to promote yourself to gain employment. Gain a deeper understanding of the funding bodies and organisations that support the stage and screen industries and consider how they might utilise these through applying for funding and other forms of support.

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.

Applicants to the Master of Design for Performance must meet the following criteria:
A 3 year undergraduate degree or equivalent, with a GPA of at least 65% in the last two years of study
or
At least 4 years of documented relevant work experience related to design and/or making of live performance, with evidence of artistic ability and practice comparable to that expected of undergraduate degree holders in relevant disciplines
IELTS (academic English Only): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based test): 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test): 79 +; Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13; Pearson Test of English (Academic): 58 + no communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 + no skill below 169.
