Gain comprehensive knowledge of the theory and research that underpin counselling practice. This programme is also a pathway to the Master of Counselling.
Programme overview
If you have a bachelors degree in education, counselling, nursing or social work and at least three years’ practical experience, this programme can broaden and advance your career. You will gain comprehensive knowledge of the theory and research that underpin counselling practice, and develop the skills necessary for effective counselling with diverse clients. You will undertake supervised practical counselling work in community settings. This programme can provide the foundation to pursue research at masters level.
If you complete the PGDipCounsTh with a GPA of 5 or higher in the most advanced courses taken, you can apply to enter into the second year of the Master of Counselling to complete the masters qualification. To do this, you must include a research methods course in your PGDipCounsTh study.
Programme structure
The PGDipCounsTh is equivalent to the first year of the Master of Counselling (MCouns).
If you complete the PGDipCounsTh with a GPA of 5 or higher in the most advanced courses taken, you can apply to enter into the second year of the MCouns to complete the masters qualification.
To do this, you must include a research methods course in your PGDipCounsTh study.
Requirement:
90 points: Core courses in Professional Counselling
30 points: Elective courses from Education Professional Studies, Education, Professional Counselling, Professional Supervision, Social Work Health Practice, or a 700 level course in another subject as approved by the Associate Dean (Postgraduate)

Applicants must hold a satisfactory level of competence in the subject area attested from a recognised institution, or an equivalent qualification. Other English Language Requirements accepted: overall score of 575 plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5 in Paper-based TOEFL; CAE score of 58 or higher, no individual language skill below borderline; CPE score of 45 or higher; PTE overall score of 65 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58; score of 85 in Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).

You will also need at least three years’ experience in teaching, counselling, nursing, social work or similar profession.
IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 575; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.
