The Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) is a four-year undergraduate degree. The first two years of the programme provide the core foundation of the degree. Years three and four allow specialization whereby students are encouraged to explore diverse areas including exercise and sport science, sport and leisure studies, exercise prescription and management, Māori physical education, dance, teaching and learning, and outdoor education. It is a well established, highly respected degree, and leads to a variety of careers. The degree emphasizes teamwork and helps students develop important interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on critical thinking, effective communication and creative problem solving. The Programs of study occur in a context that encourages interactions between our students and people from all walks of life - including people with disabilities, elite athletes, academics, business people, scientific and educational researchers, and researchers and individuals from various cultures. Major Subject Areas For a Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) degree you must major in at least one of the following subjects: Exercise and Sport Science Physical Activity and Health Professional Studies Sport and Leisure Studies Structure of the Programme Every programme of study for the degree shall satisfy the requirements for at least one of the major subjects listed above. Prerequisites, Corequisites and Restrictions Every programme of study shall satisfy the requirements for prerequisites, corequisites, and restrictions set out in the Prescriptions (published in the Guide to Enrolment). With the approval of the Dean of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences a candidate may enrol for a paper at 200-level without having satisfied the normal prerequisites. In such cases the candidate shall not be credited with the prerequisite papers. A candidate may not, having passed any such paper at 200-level, enrol subsequently for any prerequisite paper from which exemption has been given. Cross Credits A candidate who is enrolled for two degrees concurrently, or who has completed one degree and is proceeding with the other, may cross credit 100- and 200-level papers which are common to both degrees up to a maximum of 180 points. Bachelor of Physical Education with Honours (BPhEd(Hons)) is also available The degree of Bachelor of Physical Education with Honours (BPhEd(Hons)) is a more prestigious degree than the normal Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) degree, and is completed in four years. It is a research-oriented degree that culminates in the completion of a dissertation in the student's final year. Upon admission to the Honours programme students engage in an intensive workload that differs significantly from the normal BPhEd degree. The structure of the Honours course reflects the topic area of admission. In the third year courses normally require study that supports the area of research. The fourth year of the Honours programme is a prescribed year, in which students must complete a research dissertation in addition to the prescribed papers.
