Programme overview
Build your foundational knowledge and learn how to service general automotive systems to be able to work within commercial work environments.
As a graduate of this programme you will be able to:
Comply with workplace policies, procedures and relevant regulations to work safely and effectively in an automotive workshop
Select and use tools and equipment for the completion of basic workshop engineering tasks
Apply fundamental knowledge of automotive engineering systems to the maintenance of engine and driveline systems
Assess the operation and perform minor repairs on vehicle electrical and electronic control systems
Apply fundamental knowledge of automotive engineering systems to maintenance of steering, suspension and braking systems

Learn and work in Mataaho, our purpose built building just for trades. This includes multiple workshop spaces, as well as the Giltrap Volkswagen sponsored lab with the latest emulation and simulation technologies
Work with state of the art automotive technical training equipment
Work on real automotive components including engines, transmissions, and live vehicles
Hands-on working environment – the workshop is the classroom
Service a range of automotive electrical, electronic and mechanical systems
Qualification pathway
Once you’ve successfully completed this programme you can go into work as a trainee or apprentice and complete the New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering Level 4 or the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering Level 4. You can also choose to continue study in the related programme Bachelor of Applied Technology in the Transport Management or Automotive Engineering pathways.

For this programme, you will need the following:
Entry requirements vary from country to country.
Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to New Zealand NCEA (or equivalent)
If English is not your first language, you need one or more of the following:
IELTS Academic Format: 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
TOEFL (pBT) Paper-based test: Score of 500 (essay 4 TWE)
TOEFL (iBT) Internet based test: Score of 35 (writing 14)
University of Cambridge English Examinations: FCE or FCE of Schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
Pearson Test of English (Academic): 36 with no score lower than 36
