Achieve the academic requirements for Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) membership with this internationally-recognised specialised accounting degree of excellence.
This qualification has Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) accreditation and is ideal if you are studying towards becoming a Chartered Accountant or Associated Chartered Accountant. Employment opportunities for Accountants are good due to strong demand for accounting services from a wide range of businesses and individuals, and this demand is expected to keep rising.
Incorporating case studies, workplace-based or focused assignments, and a major industry project for professional accounting and associated research project; this hands-on qualification has industry experience and connections at its core. This will enable you to gain the work-ready skills that employers are looking for and to move into the professional accounting environment successfully.
You will also gain core business knowledge in management, commercial law, marketing, business computing, economics, accounting, communication, and business, heritage, culture and sustainability.
Upon successful completion of this qualification, you will be in the perfect position to then complete the final professional requirements needed to achieve full CA or ACA membership with CAANZ.
Your workload
In your first year, course work will require approximately 40 hours of both directed and self-directed study per week. Class sizes are small, allowing for more one-on-one teaching in a supportive learning environment. As you progress through the qualification, directed study hours are reduced as your study becomes much more self-directed.
Bridging options
The New Zealand Diploma in Business (offered at our Dunedin campus) provides a sound initial understanding of business operations and therefore provides a good pathway into this programme. Other programmes of study may also provide bridging options.
Next steps to becoming a CA or ACA with CAANZ
Upon successful completion of this academic programme as specified by CAANZ, graduates will be required to complete the following professional requirements to become a CA:
three years of approved practical experience under the guidance of a CA mentor
the Chartered Accountants Programme.
Upon successful completion of this academic programme as specified by Chartered Accountants ANZ, graduates will be required to complete the following professional requirements to become an ACA:
two years of approved practical experience under the guidance of a CA mentor
the Professional Ethics Module.

Applicants must have NCEA Level 3. Achievement of good results in the National Higher Education Entrance Examination commonly known as the “Gaokao” or successful completion of an Otago Polytechnic certificate programme. English Language Requirements: IELTS: 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in writing and reading; no less than 7.0 in speaking and listening).

If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 6.0, with no less than 5.5 in any band.
TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
Cambridge English Assessments: FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
Pearson Test of English (Academic): PToE (Academic) score of 50
