This four-year joint-honours degree programme develops your language skills (in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian or Spanish) whilst you train as a mathematician. The third year of your studies is spent overseas, either at a university studying mathematics, or improving your language on an approved course, or undertaking approved paid work (in a school for instance). During your three years in Manchester, you study mathematics and your chosen language in the ratio 2:1. Most teaching takes the form of lectures, with various support classes (example classes, small group tutorials, seminars or sessions in one of the computer clusters or language laboratories) to help you get to grips with the material, exploring topics and working on examples set by the lecturers. Most course units have some continual assessment (which may be, for instance, a combination of homework, essays and in-class tests), which is put together with the result of an end-of-semester examination to provide the final mark. Some course units (such as the project) are assessed entirely by your submitted work during the semester. The class of your degree is normally based on only your work in the second and fourth years.
