French is a key international language, native to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the French Caribbean, and an official language in much of Africa and Asia. Combining French and German gives you the opportunity of studying two neighbouring European cultures and their hugely important languages.  Studying French and German at Southampton offers you real insights into the cultures and societies of the larger French- and German-speaking worlds, and sharpens your understanding of their commonalities and differences. In both languages you will complement your language learning with modules on history and contemporary society literature and film, or linguistic studies. You can choose to combine these areas of study for a broad-based curriculum, or focus on the area that interests you most. Apart from acquiring linguistic competence in French and German you will build skills that are vital for post-university life and valued by employers. You will learn to absorb, analyse and assess a wide variety of viewpoints, express arguments in oral and written form, and think and work independently and in cooperation with others. You will also learn to do primary research yourself, applying a range of concepts and methods.
