Film and Philosophy is an exciting and challenging combination that provides a critical understanding of film as popular entertainment, industry and art form. Philosophy and Film are both subjects that require theoretical discipline, imagination, the ability to analyse complex texts and to communicate clearly and with flair. As well as fostering similar skill sets, they often offer complementary perspectives on topics ranging from the value of art and social mores to national identity and politics. This combined degree builds on research and teaching strengths in both areas, producing a successful and challenging course combination that benefits in particular from film's interest in aesthetics and philosophy. During a degree in Film and Philosophy at Southampton, you will critically consider the work of the great philosophers of the past while engaging with cutting edge contemporary debates. You will also look back to film’s 19th century origins and forward to today’s innovations in digital technology. Our programmes build a series of key skills valued by employers, including interpersonal communication, organisation and time-management abilities, and also offer you the opportunity to conduct primary research in archives and libraries around the country. Other specific skills include writing and oral presentation skills.
