This course combines the learning of Latin to a high level of proficiency with the wider study of a range of aspects of classical history, society and culture. It is particularly suited to those of you who wish to specialize in Latin and do not wish to learn Greek. You will study Latin language and literature in all three years. Those with A level Latin start in advanced language and literature modules, those without take language modules at an appropriate level. You will have a broad knowledge of classical history, society and culture, and an in-depth knowledge of specific areas covered in your dissertation or special subject. You will be able to read Latin literature in the original. Transferable skills you will have developed include the ability to think independently, to construct a logical argument, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to synthesize and evaluate information; you will also have the confidence to tackle the grammar of foreign languages, and experience of translating between cultures.
