The MMath Mathematics course will give you a thorough grounding in the key theories and techniques that underlie modern pure and applied mathematics and – after your first year – you will be able to choose from a varied range of modules, enabling you to focus on your specific interests. Our MMath courses produce graduates who are highly numerate and computer literate, with well-honed analytical skills – so it’s no surprise that they are in great demand in today’s workplace. We have excellent links with an extensive portfolio of organisations, and you may choose to take a Professional Training placement year which will give you invaluable experience and a real head start when you graduate. You may also have the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research within the Department of Mathematics – both through summer internships and project work. A degree in mathematics opens up a wide range of careers. Not only are mathematics and statistics central to science, technology and finance-related fields, but also the logical insight, analytical skills and intellectual discipline gained from a mathematical education are highly sought after in areas such as law, business and management. Additionally, there is a strong demand for new mathematics teachers to meet the ongoing shortage in schools. Our Year 3 undergraduates who take the ‘Mathematics Education’ module get direct experience of life in a local school, and we often find these students are then recruited to the teaching profession.
