To study Politics at UEA is to truly develop your critical thinking. Taught by staff who are research-active and experts in their field, you’ll spend your time with us asking difficult questions, debating the answers put forward with fellow students and expert academics, and formulating your own ideas. You’ll study political ideas and how politics fundamentally works, and you’ll look at these topics in the context of other countries too from the US to the Asia-Pacific, taking in Western Europe and Africa along the way. You’ll get to grips with the negotiation and bargaining processes of politics, who is involved in political discussions, who wins and who loses. The constraints some face – and the power others have access to. And you’ll come to understand why the personal and social are political too, because studying politics is about the role of gender, class and race and their relationship with political processes and outcomes. Our flexible programme will give you a solid grounding in the key themes of politics and allow you to concentrate on the aspects that interest you most. You might get into theoretical debates about the nature of the international system. Or perhaps instead lead you into detailed practical study of EU policies. Whatever subject grabs your attention, the course will provide you with the necessary knowledge and study skills to gain a sophisticated understanding of how the world works. You will develop skills such as how to argue persuasively, analyse carefully and make well-informed and well-reasoned decisions. You will also learn to challenge received wisdom, and different views, thoughtfully and respectfully. These are important personal skills for navigating the turbulent and multi-faceted world we inhabit, and they will serve you well in any number of future careers. **Course Structure** **Year 1** You’ll begin your course with compulsory modules that will help your build a foundation of knowledge about key political ideas and current topics in contemporary politics. **Year 2** As you progress you’ll be encouraged to specialise by taking modules that focus on more specific topics or regions of the world. This will help shape your expertise based on the things that you feel really passionate about. **Year 3** In your third year you will become increasingly independent in your learning, in particular, you’ll have the opportunity to go very in-depth on the subject that fascinates you most through writing a dissertation on a topic of your choice.
