专业简介
Mathematics has been proven useful in just about every field of human endeavour. It is used in science and exploration, in business and government, in industry and forecasting, in art and in banking – and our BSc Mathematics is incredibly popular as a result. Our course will help develop your interests in mathematics and statistics, and its flexible format will allow you to combine modules from pure and applied mathematics and statistics covering topics such as the history of mathematics or the theory of teaching mathematics. Our expert academics are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, guiding students through this rapidly developing subject. All of our lecturers are active researchers, who conduct world-leading work and incorporate it into their teaching. In fact, over 87% of our mathematical sciences research outputs were judged as internationally excellent or world-leading (REF 2014), so you can be sure you’ll be learning in the most up-to-date of environments. If you excel in your academic performance and wish to study further, you could take the opportunity to transfer from the BSc course onto our four-year integrated Master's in Mathematics programme.**Course Structure**You’ll begin your degree by developing your existing mathematical knowledge, before moving onto more advanced subjects as the course progresses. In years two and three you’ll be able to focus your studies through our optional modules, which means you can tailor your degree programme around your particular interests. Some optional modules – in subjects including statistics – are available each year.**Year 1**The first year will develop your skills in calculus and other topics you may have covered at A-level, such as mechanics and probability. Modules on problem solving and how to present mathematical arguments will encourage you to develop ways of tackling unfamiliar problems while also providing an opportunity for group working. And modules on algebra and analysis will introduce important new concepts and ideas, which you will use in following years.**Year 2**Your second year will feature a combination of compulsory and optional modules. The compulsory modules will introduce you to exciting applications of mathematics, such as fluid flow and aerodynamics, while also developing your understanding of the theories that underpin modern mathematics. In addition to standard optional modules such as statistics, you’ll be offered a range of more specialist modules each year. Updated annually, recent topics have included quantum mechanics, mathematical modelling and topology. You’ll also be able to take a module in a mathematics-related subject within another School in the university, such as meteorology, business or computing. Recent popular choices have included programming and financial accounting.**Year 3**There are no compulsory modules in the final year of your degree programme. Instead, we offer a wide choice of optional modules covering topics in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. As in year two, you’ll be able to study a mathematics-related subject lectured by another School within the University. We’ll also encourage you to undertake a mathematics project, which will give you a chance to immerse yourself in a topic that enthuses you. Working closely with a lecturer, you’ll develop important skills such as scientific writing and presentation techniques.**Disclaimer**Course details are subject to change.
