In your foundation year you will learn the fundamentals of biology and chemistry that underpin the study of biochemistry. Having progressed to one of the main Biochemistry degree courses, you will then be choose from a broad range of modules across topics such as cell and molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, genetics, protein engineering and microbial biotechnology. Our biochemistry degrees are taught jointly by the Schools of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. This dual approach means that in all elements of the course you benefit from subject-specific experts who inform our undergraduate teaching.You’ll be assigned an adviser from the School of Biological Sciences, who’ll guide you through your course to ensure you’re ready to progress onto the specific degree course of your choice. You’ll also have a second adviser from the School of Chemistry. This will ensure you have access to the best possible advice and guidance from both Schools.You will benefit from our enviable position as an integral partner of the Norwich Research Park (NRP), which is also home to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and independent, world-renowned research institutes such as the John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory, the Earlham Institute, and the new Quadram Institute Biosciences. During your degree you’ll have contact with academics and researchers from across the UEA Faculty of Science and from elsewhere on the NRP, many of whom are world-leaders in their chosen research areas. Beyond the timetabled lecture series, you’ll have the opportunity to attend talks by guest lecturers and speakers.Wherever your interests lie in the worlds of biological sciences and chemistry, the Foundation Year will pique your curiosity for answers to important scientific questions. You’ll cover current scientific topics that have significance and importance for society, such as the emergence of infectious diseases and the challenging field of clean energy production. Importantly, you’ll be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills by evaluating sources of scientific evidence and by including such sources in your own written work.**Course Structure**This Foundation Year enables you to develop A-Level-equivalent knowledge of chemistry, biology and physics or mathematics before you commence your full degree. Following successful completion of your Foundation Year, you will progress on to one of the main Biochemistry degree programmes. These are joint degrees with the School of Chemistry, but biochemists are registered in the School of Biological Sciences. The current progression criteria for these courses varies, but typically the BSc courses criteria are 40% overall and 60% in the Further Chemistry module. For the MSci degrees it’s 60% overall and 60% in the Further Chemistry and Further Biology modules.
