This exciting course will develop your creative skills along with your technical expertise. As a product designer you’ll be creating items that answer people’s needs and improve their lives. Your work will involve you in current topical social or environmental issues, and you’ll have the satisfaction of beginning with a concept and taking this through the design stages to a finished product. You’ll develop advanced skills in areas as such as sketching, rendering, presentation techniques, model-making and manufacture. The design process involves continuous research to develop a viable and innovative product or strategy. During the course you’ll develop creative and technical skills, and we’ll give you a thorough grounding in applied production, engineering and materials exploration and technology. By the time you graduate you’ll be generating highly complex design solutions. You’ll be familiar with using a variety of methods to produce models and prototypes such as 3D CAD using high-end industry specification software, and model making using our traditional workshops and digital and fabrication facilities. Future career: Our graduates’ design skills set means that they are in high demand by employers, with some choosing to set up on their own in business with their own design practices; Studying product design also means that you have a highly transferable skills set, and gives you an excellent grounding in related areas such as research, concept development, modelmaking, Computer Aided Design, design management, consultancy and teaching. Our students are successful in many national and international competitions and events, and often use these as a springboard to employment. Some of our recent graduates have gone on to work in UK and overseas consultancies, design engineering firms, exhibition design, packaging design as well as establishing their own companies. Others have moved on to postgraduate courses. Some graduates and current students have set up their own consultancies with the expert support of Knowledge Dock, or developed and marketed their project work with the support of our Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship.
