The secondary teaching design and technology course with QTS is one of the few teacher training courses that provide modules in all areas of design and technology; as such, employability rates for our graduates are very high. You’ll spend a significant part of this secondary teacher training course in two secondary schools, where you’ll gain practical experience of teaching design and technology. You’ll study workshop skills, including woods, metal, plastics, 3D printing and routing, plus advanced skills in food, textiles and materials. You’ll also study product design, computer-based design, including CAD/CAM, computer-aided learning, and education studies. As part of your secondary initial teacher training, you will also be offered optional accreditation in Health and Safety, Health and Hygiene Level 2, and relevant school-based ICT packages. A unique feature of our teacher training course is the experience you get across the different subject areas. These are resistant materials, textiles, food technology, systems and control and product design. Extensive project work provides the framework for a majority of the modules of study. The shortage of secondary school teachers in design and technology ensures that graduates from this teacher training course can expect good job prospects and rapid career progression.
