GERMAN at NTU is offered as a post A-level subject. Our German course covers language and life in Germany as well as exploring the implications of history, society and politics. You'll examine a range of contemporary German Film and Literature. LINGUISTICS will enhance and directly influence your understanding of human communications, identity and how language constructs and constrains meaning. German at NTU is offered as a post A-level subject, you'll focus heavily on the German language, life in Germany and the history of the country. It has been created to ensure that you quickly learn the language through language classes before delving into an in-depth understanding of the cultures and societies in which it is spoken. In Year Three you can spend time working or studying in Germany or Austria. Our partner universities are found in Bremen, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Paderborn, Potsdam and Innsbruck. You'll be taught through the use of lectures, seminars and the latest methodologies and CALL technologies. This course will help you to gain impressive communicative skills whilst developing your accuracy and fluency. Linguistics will provide you with the knowledge which is required to analyse language on a larger and more detailed scale, paying attention to the power that language has to construct meaning in societies. You'll learn language structure, the study of meaning and the social functions of language. To study this course we will not expect you to have prior knowledge of grammar; foreign languages; or technical terminology. You'll examine the latest developments in clinical linguistics, media discourse, child language acquisition and research in languages and gender and then be taught how to carry out research like linguists do. Both subjects will strengthen your writing and understanding of the English language and German language and you'll understand how language can create and constrain meaning within different societies and cultures. 92% of our linguistics joint honours undergraduates are in work or further study within just six months of finishing their degree (DLHE 2015-16). Some of our most recent graduates have followed careers within business, various government corporations, politics and the education system both in the UK and abroad. Other students have pursued careers as speech and language therapists or are working in broadcasting.
