This course allow students to combine study of linguistics with modules in English language. The two subjects are complementary, allowing them to gain a full understanding of the way in which language abilities develop as well as developing students’ knowledge and capabilities in the use of English language. In the introductory modules of the Linguistics and the English Language course students will look at issues such as how the language changes according to the context in which it is being used and how men's and women's language use differs. A degree in English Language and/or Linguistics will increase students’ knowledge of child language acquisition, speech and language disorders, the history of the English language, teaching English as a foreign language, and student’s competence in the grammatical structure and use of the English language. The programme aims to develop students’ competence and critical understanding of the range of phenomena dealt with in the field of linguistics (language structure, diversity, conceptual structure and applications in society); their proficiency is also developed in other key skills which they require for employment or further study, and for lifelong learning. In particular, the programme is designed to enhance research and analytical skills, and modes of presentation (written, electronic and oral); also facilitates the development of an ability to problem solve; to work effectively with others and to plan time with respect to deadlines.
