This course will be attractive if you are interested in learning more about the past and the way in which it is used by the heritage industry. You will explore historical and archaeological evidence and interpretations of it. The past can be exploited; it can be corrupted; it can be used to create myths, legends and identities. This course will enable you to understand and critique these processes. This programme aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of human history, of prehistory, and of the presentation of the past. It encourages you to take an analytical approach, so that you can understand and contribute to historical and archaeological controversies, and can understand ways in which the past constructed in the present. It therefore hopes to train you intellectually so you can explain the relevance of the past in the present, understand the problems of interpreting written, material and other evidence, and gain skills of research, data collection, analysis, problem-solving, construction of argument and communication. The heritage elements of the scheme explore in detail how the past is exploited and corrupted, how it can be used to create myths and identities, and how it is interpreted by the heritage industry (museums, country houses, the entertainment industry etc). By including archaeological study, the scheme also enables you to appreciate the differing and related contributions that material culture, landscape and documentary evidence offer to our understanding of past societies and social change. There is a focus on the archaeology of Britain, Ireland and Europe during the course; whilst an increasing practical element enables you to gain skills in data collection and analysis. Many of the modules on offer take advantage of the proximity to Bangor of numerous heritage sites and archaeological evidence.
