During this course you will spend two-thirds of your time studying English Language and one-third studying Creative Writing. The introductory modules for English Language look at issues such as how our language changes according to the context in which it is being used, how men's and women's language use differs, how we acquire language and how and why it continues to evolve. The programme aims to develop students’ competence and critical understanding of the range of phenomena dealt with in the field of English language (the structure of English, the sound pattern of English, history of English, dialects and variation, English in society, and the emergence of English as the world’s global language); their proficiency is also developed in other key skills which they require for employment or further study, and for lifelong learning. In particular, the programme is designed to enhance research and analytical skills, and modes of presentation (written, electronic and oral); the programme also facilitates the development of an ability to problem solve; to work effectively with others and to plan time with respect to deadlines. Creative writing part of this course is aimed at students who want to study Creative Writing (for example fiction, poetry and scriptwriting). This exciting course develops connections between the critical study of English Language and the creative practice of writing in a variety of forms. You will learn to approach texts as both a reader and a writer, discovering links and synergies between these different perspectives. Through critical knowledge and practical experience, you will learn how to write in several genres, including the novel, the short story, travel writing, writing for performance, writing for young adults, screenwriting and poetry.
