This degree course offers the opportunity to study English Language (50%) and Italian (50%). The introductory modules for English Language look at issues such as how our language changes according to the context in which it is being used, how men's and women's language use differs, how we acquire language and how and why it continues to evolve. The programme aims to develop students’ competence and critical understanding of the range of phenomena dealt with in the field of English language (the structure of English, the sound pattern of English, history of English, dialects and variation, English in society, and the emergence of English as the world’s global language); their proficiency is also developed in other key skills which they require for employment or further study, and for lifelong learning. In particular, the programme is designed to enhance research and analytical skills, and modes of presentation (written, electronic and oral); the programme also facilitates the development of an ability to problem solve; to work effectively with others and to plan time with respect to deadlines. The Italian part of the course will provide you with advanced skills in the Italian language and a broad range of specialised and detailed insights into the culture, society and history that go with it. The Italian aspect of the course has language at the heart of it, with core modules developing the key oral, aural and written skills every year. These modules also foster cultural awareness, which you will need for your year abroad, and later on, for the world of work.
