This degree provides high-level linguistic training in two languages and enables you to acquire vocational expertise in the theory and practice of translation, building on established excellence in Swansea’s Department of Modern Languages. Studying Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting gives you the opportunity to work intensively with three languages. You will not only acquire a high level of knowledge in foreign languages, but also refine the command of your native language. This gives you access to foreign cultures through the communication with people representing these cultures themselves. It also offers excellent job perspectives. The increase in international contacts means that more and more well-qualified translators are necessary. With a good qualification in translation you can get a share in a world-wide, multi-billion markets. In order to structure an academically coherent and intellectually rigorous programme, the degree is built around compulsory and optional modules. It is delivered through lectures, tutorials and seminars. You will usually receive nine hours minimum scheduled contact time with your teachers every week. We will challenge you with demanding teaching and assessment. Assessment includes essay, coursework and examination, presentations and a dissertation. 92.3 per cent of Modern Languages Single and Joint Honours Graduates from Swansea University are in work and/or further study six months after graduation. Graduating with an internationally recognised degree in French will put you in a great position to succeed in a wide range of careers. You will gain excellent oral and writing skills and you will learn to present your ideas in a range of formats. You will also develop strong research and analytical skills and the ability to problem solve and make informed decisions. Our programme includes various forms of assessment, teamwork through seminars, tutorials and group presentations and an independent study - dissertation. You will learn to manage your time and workload effectively. All of these skills will ensure you can compete very successfully in the employment market. Our students have progressed to a broad range of work sectors including education, marketing, human resources, tourism and events management, working for companies such as: Royal Mail Group; Superdry and Berkeley PR International.
