The explosion of ‘big data’, in sectors including on-line consumer behaviour, genome sequencing, eHealth and smart energy systems, means there is an urgent need for mathematicians who can handle complex datasets, communicate effectively, and fully understand the techniques, pitfalls, and potential of advanced mathematical methods.
