Course objectives The Bachelor of Legal Studies is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the study of law, legal systems and dispute resolution processes. It develops in students legal research and legal reasoning skills and an understanding of private and public law principles as well as international law and global perspectives. The course is aimed at meeting the needs and aspirations of those with an interest in the law, but who are not looking to practice law professionally. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the Bachelor of Legal Studies (AQF Level 7) graduates will be able to: Demonstrate understanding of the origin and function of law in society. Make connections between law and other disciplines, recognise the pervasiveness of law in our society and the purposes for which it exists. Demonstrate a knowledge of key legal areas, private and public law principles. Apply key principles of international law to global issues. Demonstrate awareness and ability to identify ethical issues, understanding of ethical frameworks and able to make informed decisions based on reasoning processes and guided by those frameworks. Apply critical legal reasoning skills and legal research methodology with respect to legal decision‐making, and problem solving, using case law and statutes. Refine research questions, identify appropriate reference sources and methodologies, distil and analyse information to produce a well justified outcome/response. Demonstrate capacity to communicate legal concepts to lay audiences in verbal, written and other ways (as appropriate).
