If you have interest in the law and how it shapes contemporary society, but you’re not looking to practice law professionally, the Bachelor of Legal Studies is the degree for you. It is also an ideal choice if you’ve been working in a legal or justice-related field and would like to expand your professional knowledge and skills to develop your career.
Develop your understanding of the law, the tools to research and interpret legal materials, and how make arguments about law as an insider – with a broader context of law in society. Work in the legal field without setting foot in the courtroom.
Follow your passions with units available in environmental, sports, media, information technology and animal law, corporate social responsibility and consumer law, family and healthcare law, criminology and sentencing, human rights and advocacy, and more.
Course objectives
The Bachelor of Legal Studies is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the study of law, legal systems and dispute resolution processes. It develops in students legal research and legal reasoning skills and an understanding of private and public law principles as well as international law and global perspectives. The course is aimed at meeting the needs and aspirations of those with an interest in the law, but who are not looking to practice law professionally.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Legal Studies (AQF Level 7) graduates will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the origin and function of law in society.
Make connections between law and other disciplines, recognise the pervasiveness of law in our society and the purposes for which it exists.
Demonstrate a knowledge of key legal areas, private and public law principles.
Apply key principles of international law to global issues.
Demonstrate awareness and ability to identify ethical issues, understanding of ethical frameworks and able to make informed decisions based on reasoning processes and guided by those frameworks.
Apply critical legal reasoning skills and legal research methodology with respect to legal decision‐making, and problem solving, using case law and statutes.
Refine research questions, identify appropriate reference sources and methodologies, distil and analyse information to produce a well justified outcome/response.
Demonstrate capacity to communicate legal concepts to lay audiences in verbal, written and other ways (as appropriate).
Work collaboratively with peers in small and large groups to explore different perspectives and participate in active problem solving.
Reflect on performance and make use of feedback to support personal and professional development.

A well-rounded understanding of the law is central to understanding contemporary society – how local businesses and multi-national corporates trade, how governments at all levels exercise power, and how vulnerable people and places can be protected.
