The BA (Hons) English Literature offers students the opportunity to study English Literature of all periods from the Renaissance to the present day, with particular specialisms in regional studies and spatiality (including the literature of the Midlands), fantasy and speculative fictions, African-American literature, Chicana/o and Latina/o literatures, anglophone world literatures, literatures of the American West, literatures of disability and experimental literatures.**Year One**Modules in the first year provide students with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of critical theoretical approaches to the study of Literature, as well as about the major literary periods and genres within the English tradition, aiming to prepare students for higher-level study.Students will have the chance to learn about employability and the practical business of the literary words through Literary Festivals, and also have the opportunity to take a module exclusively devoted to one of the course’s major specialisms, Space, Place, Regionalisms, Globalisms. Students will also be able to take an Add+Vantage module which can allow them to develop their CV by taking credits in an area of study not explicitly related to their degree.**Year Two**Modules in the second year can allow students to broaden and deepen their study of the subject by taking 40-credit modules in Post-1800 Literature and in Pre-1800 Literature which will allow them to study a range of the specialist concerns of the course, at the same time as problematizing and moving beyond traditional period divisions of the subject.Students will also have the opportunity to enjoy a choice from a range of very different option modules, including Literatures of Disability, The American West: Real and Imagined and the English Literature International Study Trip. The latter allows second-year students every year the chance to study both international influences upon English Literature and its own international legacy and reception, both in the classroom in the UK and on location internationally. Students may be eligible for some financial support from the Centre for Global Engagement and from the School of Humanities, but will otherwise have to cover their own costs. Finally, students will continue their studies in the practical business of the literary world, and again have the opportunity to take an Add+Vantage module.**Optional Placement Year**After the end of the second year, students have the option to take either a placement year (in the UK, or abroad) or a study-abroad year, and if they do so will take the non-credit bearing modules 6038HUM Placement Year module or 6039HUM Study Abroad Year module, which will help to ensure that they learn from and reflect upon their experiences.N.B. Students will be given advice by Employment Personal Tutors or the Centre for Global Engagement, but may be responsible for finding their own placements (with guidance). Similarly, study-abroad years with a student’s first choice of international institution cannot be guaranteed. Students pay no fees to Coventry University for their placement or study-abroad year though are responsible for covering their own costs.**Final Year**In the third year students have the opportunity to study a range of research-led modules at the cutting edge of the subject, taught by research-active academics who are advancing the frontiers of knowledge in the discipline.These include modules in Shakespeare and the Environment and in Speculative Fiction, as well as choices from a wide range of option modules including Stylistics and Experimental Fiction, Utopias and Dystopias, Romanticism and Revolution, Chicana/o and Latina/o Literatures and African American Writing: Place, Race and Identity.
