This course explores the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome through the study of their languages, Greek and Latin. Read ancient texts in the original and learn how languages – ancient and modern – develop and function.  Whether you have any experience of studying ancient languages or not you can develop an advanced knowledge of Latin and Greek, learning to read the words written by ancient authors. We offer core modules in both languages at all levels, from absolute beginner through to advanced, in all three years of the degree. Each week you will receive an impressive three to four hours of language teaching in small class groups, working on grammar, vocabulary and translation. All students are encouraged to undertake a work placement and the Department benefits from a dedicated placements officer to help with CV writing and letters of application. Past students have undertaken work placements in charities and barristers' chambers, and within a division of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Others have enjoyed placements in the Netherlands and the Isle of Man. The University's museums can also provide a number of paid and voluntary placements. As a Classics student, you can take part in the Minimus Scheme teaching Latin to local school children. Additionally, the Classics Department has close links to overseas institutions including the University of Malta. If you would like to gain first-hand experience of life in another culture you can choose to study abroad for part of your degree through our Erasmus+ programme. Recent graduates have gone on to linguistic work in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, junior curatorial positions in the British Museum and other museums, the BBC, the Environment Agency, Siemens and Sotheby's. Others have gone into a wide variety of careers, including work in accountancy and banking, government and the civil service, law, heritage and museums, teaching, publishing, public sector management, libraries and archives, and media research and production. The skills you'll develop through studying for a degree in Classics are highly transferable and will prepare you well for whatever career path you choose to pursue.
