The Department of International History at LSE is one of the UK's leading centres of historical research. With its emphasis on the international context of historical developments, it provides a supportive, but challenging environment for those interested in undertaking a research project leading to a PhD in International History. It offers a comprehensive range of special areas for research, ranging from the early 16th century to the late 20th century. Students will register for the PhD initially and will progress to the PhD subject to satisfactory performance. Throughout your studies, you will partake in research training alongside your academic research. This will involve attending and participating in workshops and specialised research seminars in order to develop skills specific to your needs. Students will also be able to draw on an unparalleled diversity of archival resources in London. We are able to supervise work drawing on materials in Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Persian, in addition to the more common European languages. The courses offered at graduate level cover a wide range of cultures and periods, and allow students to build upon and move beyond the nationally based histories traditionally taught at school and in many other universities. Particular areas of expertise include Europe, the Middle East, Africa, China, India, Japan and the United States. The cosmopolitan nature of the student body itself enhances classroom discussions of past and present international controversies.
