Overview Translators and interpreters are proficient bilinguals with a love of language. Linguists with skills in TESOL have a deep understanding of the complex relationship between language use, particularly in diverse cultural contexts. This course will develop your existing linguistic skills, provide you with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the fields of both TESOL and translation and interpreting. KEY FEATURES This course is suited to language professionals working in either language teaching, curriculum development and evaluation, policy development or in commercial and community services that require cross-cultural mediation by translators and interpreters. Units are internationally relevant and focus on the development of discourse and analytic skills to inform the practice of English language teaching and translation and interpreting practice. This course is primarily undertaken on campus, however some applied linguistics units and translation theory units can be taken externally. You'll have the opportunity to study with one of the largest and most diverse linguistics departments in Australia, which is home to four research centres. ACCREDITATION The program is a NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) approved course for accreditation at professional translator and interpreter's level. Career Opportunities PROFESSIONS There are opportunities as a freelance or in-house interpreter or translator in a variety of settings. You can also use translating and interpreting to work as a language expert or consultant in all types of public and private organisations. There are also opportunities as language professionals, working the areas of language teaching, curriculum development, education assessment and program evaluation, teacher training, policy development, management or community services where language and communication are critical issues.
