An MPhil is awarded for research that demonstrates that the candidate’s thesis has the capacity to: make a contribution to knowledge in the area with which it deals by presenting new facts, make a contribution to knowledge in the area with which it deals by demonstrating an independent critical ability to evaluate existing material in a new light, is satisfactory as regards to literary presentation, and contains material suitable for publication. A candidates program of study will be supervised by eligible academic staff member’s consisting of a principal and associate supervisor. External adjunct supervisors maybe appointed who have demonstrated expertise in the area. Funding MPhil candidates receive up to $5,000 for project support over their candidature time. This funding assists with costs relating to: fieldwork, research visits, academic conferences, data sets, and copy editing, thesis printing and binding. MPhil graduates find employment opportunities in: academia government financial institutions management and senior research positions in various industries, as well as in organisations that set national and international research agendas, norms and standards, articulate evidence-based policy options, and monitor trends Length of candidature The minimum period of candidature is one year and the maximum period is two years for full-time candidates and four years for part-time candidates. Extensions may be granted in special circumstances, but may be subject to an out of time (OOT) fee. Part-time candidates must be able to spend on average throughout the year at least 20 hours a week on a program of research and advanced study and attend the University on an average of at least once a week for consultation with their supervisors.
