This course is for graduates of a four-year accredited psychology program. It will suit those following a study pathway to registration and currently registered psychologists who intend to qualify for an area of practice endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia.
This degree
The Master of Psychology (Clinical) provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles of psychological assessment and therapy, and the clinical skills required to assess and treat a wide variety of clinical conditions in children, adolescents and adults.
Teaching methods include face to face classes, weekend workshops and supervised clinical workshops at the University Northfields Psychology Clinic and at external placements. The emphasis is on skills training and includes demonstration sessions, audio-visual recording of assessment and therapy, case presentations, role-play activities and feedback.
What you will study
The program includes subjects in Child and Adult Assessment and Psychopathology, Psychotherapy, Neuropsychology, Cognitive Behavioural Therapies and Health and Wellbeing. Students are also required to complete a research project - facilitated by structured research subjects - in each of the two years of the program.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of Psychology (Clinical) will be able to:
Knowledge:
Demonstrate a detailed and specialised knowledge of psychological principles, professional ethics and standards (including the ethical, legal and professional aspects of psychological practice), theories of individual and systemic functioning and change, dysfunctional behaviour, psychopathology, the cultural bases of behaviour and organisational systems.
Demonstrate a detailed and specialised knowledge in conducting systematic psychological assessment including diagnostic classification systems and the limitations of psychological tests.
Demonstrate a detailed and specialised knowledge in a range of intervention techniques and strategies including their empirical and theoretical bases, for both individuals and groups.
Skills:
Apply ethical principles effectively to complex ethical dilemmas and generate appropriate responses to such dilemmas.
Determine the most appropriate assessment to administer based on synthesis of complex problem presentations, ancillary data and relevant psychological theories.
Administer and interpret a range of specified tests including intelligence, personality, and memory tests and the mental status examination.
Carry out structured and unstructured interviews, selection interviews, survey interviews, clinical interviews for diagnostic purposes including history taking, and group-based interviews.
Applications:
Display conduct or behaviour consistent with the legal requirements and codes of conduct relevant to psychologists.
Promote, restore, sustain or enhance cognitive functioning and a sense of well-being in individuals or groups of clients through preventive, developmental or remedial services.
Interact on a professional level with a wide range of client groups and other professionals.
Apply research knowledge and skills to psychological practice.
Engage in systematic inquiry involving problem identification and the acquisition, organisation, and interpretation of information allowing critical analysis and disciplined, rigorous, careful and scientific inquiry into psychological phenomena.

An Honours Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline at Class II Division 2 or higher or appropriate Master of Philosophy with a strong thesis performance. Special Admission Requirements: All applicants for research degrees must submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. This proposal should: commence with a statement detailing any previous research or project experience you have undertaken, including if possible a copy of the abstract of such work; contain, in no more than one additional page, a clearly focused research proposal for the study you would wish to undertake throughout your registration in the course; and conclude with a statement of your motivation for wanting to undertake the research course. English language requirements: IELTS - 6.5 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 6.0); TOEFL – 88 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 18).
国际学生入学条件
Students must have successfully completed a four year, or three year plus a fourth year APAC-accredited sequence in psychology, within the last 10 years, with an Honours degree of at least Class II Division 1 (or equivalent 4th year qualification) to be a successful candidate for the Clinical Psychology Program.
International applicants must have their qualifications assessed and judged to be equivalent to an Australian 4-year sequence of Psychology by the Australian Psychological Society.
