The Master of Maritime Studies degree is designed to meet the early or mid-career education requirements of maritime professionals working in a policy or operational context, or those who intend to pursue a career in a maritime or related field.
Maritime Studies deals with policy, law and security issues related to the world’s oceans. It addresses these issues in the contexts of trade, living and non-living marine resources, the sea as an important natural environment, and international political tensions and cooperation.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of Maritime Studies will be able to:
Evaluate the key principles of the law of the sea and in at least one of the following areas of maritime policy: maritime enforcement, maritime security, marine environmental law, oceans policy and fisheries management;
Analyse the legal, political and operational factors that contribute to the development of the law of the sea and maritime policy;
Devise potential solutions to gaps in the legal and policy framework of the law of the sea by identifying and analysing relevant issues;
Address key issues in maritime studies by applying effective research skills and reviewing, analysing and synthesising complex theories and concepts;
Communicate concepts effectively to a range of audiences;
Independently plan and execute a substantial research-based project or piece of scholarship that demonstrates advanced understanding and critical analysis of the area of Maritime Studies.

An Honours Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline at Class II Division 2 or higher or appropriate Master of Philosophy with a strong thesis performance. Special Admission Requirements: All applicants for research degrees must submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. This proposal should: commence with a statement detailing any previous research or project experience you have undertaken, including if possible a copy of the abstract of such work; contain, in no more than one additional page, a clearly focused research proposal for the study you would wish to undertake throughout your registration in the course; and conclude with a statement of your motivation for wanting to undertake the research course. English language requirements: IELTS - 6.5 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 6.0); TOEFL – 88 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 18).
国际学生入学条件
A recognised Bachelor Honours degree or a Graduate Certificate in a relevant area. Applicants with a recognised Bachelor degree who do not have Honours or a Graduate Certificate qualification may seek entry to the course if they have appropriate professional experience, i.e. the ability to demonstrate a number of years’ employment in a maritime related field. Examples may include naval officers, public servants or enforcement personnel.
Applications should be submitted in writing to the ANCORS Postgraduate Coordinator, including supporting evidence of an appropriate background. This may include a copy of a letter of employment, or a copy of a reference received. Consideration will be given to aspects such as the length and field of professional experience.
English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic Overall Score of 6.5, reading 6.0, writing 6.0, listening 6.0, speaking 6.0; TOEFL (Internet-based) score of 88, reading 18, writing 18, listening 18, speaking 18; Cambridge English: CAE and CPE score of 176; PTE Academic overall score of 64 (Minimum communicative skill score of 57).
