专业简介
The world of electrical engineering is advancing at an increasing pace. Although the field first developed in the early 19th century, society’s reliance on electricity and power has seen the field rapidly diversify into a wide range of sub-fields. These include power engineering, control systems, electronics and signal processing. Although the application of electrical engineering in an increasing number of disciplines is beneficial employment-wise, it poses a challenge for electrical engineers, who in addition to designing systems that function optimally, reliably, safely and with new features, must be able to draw on expert knowledge in a wide range of areas. For example, when working with cars, electrical engineers are no longer solely focused on the engine but on ensuring the power electronics, batteries, embedded computer controlled sub-systems, electronic communication systems, and myriad electronic sensors all work in unison.
You can choose to study one of four streams: Embedded Systems, Telecommunications and Networking, Emerging Power Systems or Chemical Engineering. Throughout a one-year project, you will have the opportunity to investigate and apply emergent technologies in your chosen field.
Embedded Systems (MJRP-EMSYS)
Our world is characterised by the ever-increasing number of intelligent devices which have inbuilt or 'embedded' computers. Embedded systems are computers with specialised input/output devices that may or may not be programmed by the end user. In this stream students will study intermediate and advanced topics in embedded systems, for example, embedded systems in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and embedded software engineering. During their one-year project students have the opportunity to further investigate and apply emergent technologies in embedded systems.
Telecommunications and Networking (MJRP-TLNET)
The electronics and communication fields represent two of the fastest growing technology areas in the world. With the rapid progress of information technology, the role of communications is becoming even more crucial for increasing industry efficiency and competition. This stream explores relevant topics in telecommunications and networking like mobile radio communications and data network security.
Emerging Power Systems (MJRP-EMPWR)
Electricity is a key energy source in the development and progress of contemporary society. Since fossil fuels are a finite resource, the development of alternative sources of electrical energy such as solar and wind is vital. This stream addresses challenges in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Emergent technologies like smart grid and distributed generation are covered in detail. During their one-year project students have the opportunity to further investigate and apply emergent technologies in power systems.
Chemical Engineering (MJRP-CHEMM)
This major in Chemical Engineering is designed for those students who have an undergraduate degree in engineering or technology (other than chemical engineering) or a related discipline in science, to gain content knowledge in areas specific to Chemical Engineering. It will provide the graduates with strong theoretical, laboratory, design and research experiences which are essential to the development of professional competence. The graduate students from this major may be able to fast track a career in chemical processing industries.
