The postgraduate program in engineering science (materials) provides an extension to your undergraduate study focusing on the selection, production and behaviour of practical materials used in engineered products. Materials represents an important component of many technological products and the engineering of materials connects to a variety of research areas including nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical sciences, electrical engineering and civil engineering. Materials engineers also look closely at materials failure – fracture, corrosion, wear – destructive and non-destructive testing, and are generally interested in solid materials as they are primarily the materials used for manufacture. Materials engineering involves whole-of-life considerations, including recycling, and generally involves using materials in bulk. In addition, the Master of Engineering Science (Material) may include topics in: chemical reactivity, spectroscopy and data analysis, analysis of engineering systems, fluid mechanics, materials selection in design, applied spectroscopy and electrochemistry, biomaterials, corrosion, polymer science, fatigue and fracture analysis, solid mechanics, manufacturing processes and metal forming, and advanced mechanical design.
