Radiographers (also known as medical imaging technologists) play a key role in patient care and often work in a team environment with other health professionals. Using techniques such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), they produce high-quality medical images which are then used by medical specialists to diagnose, manage and treat an injury or disease. Why choose this course? This course is taught by registered professionals and opportunities for practical experience begin in your first year. We incorporate technology into our teaching practices so that you learn in simulated clinical environments and practise relevant skills before imaging real patients. Sessions in our laboratories allow you to develop skills in patient positioning and image production. We have specialist equipment for digital radiography, general X-ray, mobile X-ray, mammography and dental. Our anatomy laboratory and pathology specimen museum will help strengthen your confidence and knowledge. You will also develop competency in computer systems and software that are used throughout industry. This program is embedded with supervised clinical experience, with significant time in the third and fourth years. Placements are offered across public and private hospitals, and a range of imaging facilities throughout Queensland and some interstate sites. Hospital placement includes shifts in departments such as theatre, emergency and intensive care. These varying environments offer an opportunity to experience patients with different cases and from many cultural backgrounds. Career outcomes Radiographers play a key role in patient care by providing referring medical practitioners with additional diagnostic information to assist in patient management and treatment. You may become a team member in a radiology department in a hospital, private radiology practice or health department, or you may be employed in medical equipment sales.
