Our community research focus
VU offers expertise and guidance in several specialised research areas. Postgraduate research will bring you into contact with our vibrant and innovative research community.
Related research themes include community resilience, liveable and inclusive cities, cultural diversity and wellbeing, and community, identity and displacement.
The Community, Identity and Displacement Research Network (CIDRN)(external link) promotes research into displacement, identity, community and change, focused on Melbourne’s west.
Our Centre for Cultural Diversity & Wellbeing (CCDW) conducts research relating to cultural diversity and resilience, social wellbeing, and approaches to reducing social harms in local and global contexts.
A flexible postgraduate program
VU offers flexible study options, with courses designed to lead into one another. This makes it easy for you to graduate with the qualification that suits you, within a timeframe that suits you.
This master degree is the final stage of a nested suite of three courses that make up the Master of International Community Development. The two previous stages are:
Graduate Certificate in International Community Development
Graduate Diploma in International Community Development.
Completion of one stage gives you credit towards the next. You can choose to exit the course at graduate certificate or graduate diploma level.
Careers in community development
Graduates find work in many related areas, including international humanitarian aid and development aid.
Careers include:
international and regional consultant in human rights, gender, poverty reduction and project evaluation
project manager with international, government and local organisations such as Australian Red Cross, Save the Children, Asylum Seekers Resources Centre

Course structure
To complete the Master of International Community Development students will be required to complete 192 credit points consisting of the following:
72 credit points of Core studies
72 credit points of Elective studies.
48 credit points of either Community-Based Research or Research Thesis.

Students must have Bachelor/Honours degree: Successful completion of a cognate (similar discipline) Bachelor/Honours Degree; or Successful completion of a non-cognate (any discipline) Bachelor/Honours Degree and a Graduate Certificate in a cognate (similar discipline) field. English language requirements: International English Language Testing System or its equivalent - overall score of 6.5 and no individual band score less than 6.
