The Master of Arts by Research degree program involves the completion of a thesis proposal and a research thesis. It is designed for students wishing to engage in serious research but not able to devote the three years required to complete a PhD or with a research project which does not lend itself to that level of extended treatment. Historical research at UNSW extends from ancient to contemporary times and focuses on such key areas of colonialism, transnational movements, gender, migrants, national histories, the family, cultural and religious identities, the environment, world history and much more. Our higher degree research students undertake original historical research that critically engages with an immense range of subject areas and with the main themes that are relevant to the human condition in an environment noted for breadth and innovation.
