French at Glasgow offers a broad spectrum of expertise and supervision from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period, on poetry, the novel, theatre and performance studies, language studies, cultural studies, theory and thought, and visual cultures including emblems, fine art and cinema. French at Glasgow is part of a thriving School of Modern Languages and Cultures, with a lively research environment and postgraduate community. Staff produce world-leading research both within specialist fields of French and Francophone Studies, through transcultural, comparative work with colleagues from other languages across the School, and in more wide-ranging interdisciplinary collaborations across the College of Arts (English Literature, History, History of Art, Film, Digital Humanities, Philosophy, Theology) and College of Social Sciences (Politics, Education, Sociology, Economic History). A Doctor of Philosophy may be awarded to a student whose thesis is an original work making a significant contribution to knowledge in, or understanding of, a field of study and normally containing material worthy of publication.
