The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is completed entirely by research where you will work with an assigned supervisor and an associate supervisor.
Full time candidature is normally three to four years, while part time candidature can take up to eight years. You will be required to complete a probationary year and to produce an extended thesis proposal (8000 to 10,000 words) at the end of your first year of full time or part time equivalent candidature. The normal length of the PhD thesis is approximately 80,000 words. Examination is by submission of the thesis.
Research areas
Social Work PhD candidates at the Faculty of Education and Social Work may undertake research in one of the following research centres: Social Policy Research Network; Social structures, inequalities and social justice or an area negotiated with a potential supervisor.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Applicants may apply to enter the Doctor of Philosophy by one of two qualifying pathways: direct entry or pathway A. In both instances, admission is subject to acceptance of the intending applicant's research proposal of 1,000 words, which must address criteria specified by the faculty, on the faculty web site. Direct entry Applicants may qualify if their research proposal is accepted, by a potential supervisor, and they satisfy one of the criteria listed below: a bachelor degree with first or second class honours in an appropriate area of study that includes a research thesis based on primary data, not only a literature review, or a master's degree by research in an appropriate area of study that includes a research thesis that draws on primary data, or a masters degree by coursework with a 12,000-15,000 word research thesis or dissertation that draws on primary data, not a literature review, with a grade point average of at least 80% in the degree.
