If your ambition is to make a positive difference to the lives of children and adolescents, then this is the program for you. The Master of Teaching (School Counselling) qualifies you to become a school counsellor as well as a qualified teacher in one area of the secondary school curriculum.
You will gain hands-on experience with 40 days of teaching practice in schools in two blocks, a school counselling professional experience in year one, a 25-day internship in school counselling in year two and a small-scale applied psychology research project. This experience will ensure you develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a successful school counsellor/school psychologist working across early childhood, primary, secondary and special schools.
In New South Wales, school counsellors are qualified teachers who also have postgraduate qualifications in psychology sufficient for eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
On completion of this degree, you may choose to complete the necessary additional requirements to become a registered psychologist, which includes a period of nine terms of supervised practice.
This course is designed to prepare students to become school counsellors / school psychologists, whilst also qualifying as a teacher in one area of the secondary-school curriculum. To this end, all candidates undertake coursework and professional experiences in school counselling and one of the curriculum areas listed on the prerequisites page.
Graduate opportunities
School counsellors work as psychologists in government and non-government schools across all sectors of the education community: primary, secondary and special education. Their role includes:
assessing individual children, including those with disabilities
working with children and adolescents who have difficulties in learning and/or behaviour
counselling children and adolescents who have mental-health and/or behaviour issues
interviewing and working with parents and teachers
engaging in preventative and proactive programs in schools with children, teacher and parents
researching the needs of children and adolescents
participating in up-to-date professional development

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (School Counselling) are required to have:
completed a fourth year of tertiary studies in psychology that meets the standards required of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), for example, a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours); and
sufficient tertiary studies in a secondary school teaching area that meets the prerequisites for that area listed as curriculum areas, noting that a psychology major is a suitable prerequisite for the teaching area Geography/Society and Culture. Applicants who have not completed any tertiary-level studies in a geography-related discipline are required to undertake a Geosciences unit of study (normally GEOS1001) in Year 1, Semester One of the MTeach.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 105 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading and 25 in Writing and 27 in Listening and Speaking.
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.5 overall including a minimum result of 7.0 in Reading and Writing and 8.0 in Listening and Speaking.
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 615 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in Writing
