This course provides an opportunity for research training across our priority research areas including: cancer; chronic disease and ageing; infection and immunity; injury and acute illness; and mental health. You will engage with world-class researchers to develop your expertise and gain advanced research and critical thinking skills that you can take into your professional life, or advance into a Doctor of Philosophy (Nursing).
Ranked 9th globally, the University of Sydney is a world leader in nursing education and research. You will gain advanced research and critical thinking skills that will see you publish work in journals, improve patient experiences and influence health policy. The Master of Philosophy (Nursing) is awarded at the completion of a thesis that spans 1-2 years as well as some aspects of coursework in research techniques. You will work individually on their research project under the direction of a research supervisor who is a leader in the nursing field.
Research areas
Master of Philosophy candidates may undertake research in one of the following five pillars:
maternal
prenatal and women's health
cancer and palliative care
chronic diseases and co-morbidities
intensive care, trauma and emergency
mental health.
Across these pillars, candidates will work in the areas of patient and health outcomes, experience of illness and the support of family and careers, health systems, services and policies, primary health care and developments in nursing and midwifery.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply in plenty of time, and even before completion of their current qualifying degree. In these circumstances, referee reports are essential as part of the application for admission. To apply, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, to be eligible you will have: a Bachelor's degree or qualifications demonstrating equivalence with a Bachelor's degree; or a Master's degree and have a minimum of one year's work experience. These criteria constitute the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the Associate Dean (HDR) for a given Faculty.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in Writing
