Research at the University of Sydney Medical School embraces health and medical research from fundamental molecular mechanisms through to clinical research and trials; from public health issues to health policy development. This course is aimed at those who intend to pursue a career in medical or health research or who wish to gain a competitive edge by demonstrating superior ability and research experience. It may also be used as a stepping-stone to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Sydney Medical School is dedicated to improving health through excellence in research, creating new knowledge and fostering innovation. Our research is focused on both discovery and translating new discoveries into improved healthcare.
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is aimed at those who intend to pursue careers in medical or health research or who wish to gain a competitive edge by demonstrating superior ability and research experience. The MPhil is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis.
The faculty may admit an applicant that has obtained at least a credit in the highest course available in the subject or subjects relevant to the proposed course of advanced study and research. Full-time MPhil students have a minimum of 1 year and maximum of 2 years to submit a thesis for examination. Part-time students have a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years to submit.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.
