专业简介
Geographic Information Science (GIS) is an expanding discipline designed to harness such data, facilitating a better understanding of what happens on Earth for both the physical environment and human populations. GIS is a key skills shortage area in New Zealand and the sector is still growing. As a postgraduate GIS student, you’ll explore, store, manipulate, analyse and visualise data with a spatial or geographic component. You'll also investigate the ideas behind the creation of these systems and think about the way we can conceptualise spatial problems—from disaster management, to conservation monitoring, to archaeology.
Make valuable connections
The existing links with other programmes in the School and wider university, as well as the GIS community in Wellington and New Zealand, will provide you with unique opportunities to develop professional linkages and networks.
Wellington is a key employment market for GIS professionals. Decision makers are increasingly relying on geospatial data in numerous forms: remote sensing, crowd sourcing, official statistics, and environmental monitoring. Government agencies at both central and local level, as well as private companies and Crown Research Institutes, create a vibrant professional community.
Gain an edge in your career
The discipline of GIS is growing both nationally and internationally. Organisations in many areas need GIS graduates who can integrate GIS with their core business. These postgraduate programmes will provide exciting opportunities for graduates in government agencies, private companies or Crown Research Institutes. The programmes are suited to both new entrants to the spatial industries and those looking to upskill in their current roles.
