Advance your career
With the profusion of data and the rapid emergence of new technologies in today's digital world, effective management of information systems is vital to any successful organisation.
Get a specialist qualification that is designed for IT professionals who want to move into senior management roles and build on their knowledge and experience.
Returning to study
Many students return to university for postgraduate study after several years away. If it's been a while since you've studied, our liaison officers can help you get back into university life.
Careers
Get prepared for promotion to a higher-level management position like chief information officer, chief technology officer, chief digital officer or other senior roles in the management of information services and information systems. Or you might use your knowledge to create your own online startup.
Graduates with Master’s degrees in management and information technology are in high demand and are among New Zealand’s highest earners five years after the completion of their degrees.
Employer support
The capability boost you get from doing an MIM means your employer may be willing to pay some or all of your costs. Many students are reimbursed their study fees for every course they pass.
Qualification family structure
The Master of Information Management is part of a tiered family of qualifications:
Postgraduate Diploma in Information Management
Postgraduate Certificate in Information Management
Choose the qualification that suits your career goals, time constraints and financial situation.
What you'll study
Your MIM will provide you with a broad understanding of information management and encourage personal development and exploration. Your studies will include:
Two core courses you'll learn about communication and critical thinking in information management, and management in the new information age.
Eight other courses choose from a wide variety of courses according to your interests and career goals in subjects like managing IT change, IT security, managing big data and analytics, and emerging information technologies. These courses change regularly to include fast-developing subjects.
A case study you'll do your own investigation into an IT management issue relevant to your career goals.
The Diploma programme requires you do the two core courses and six more courses of your choice, and Certificate students do the two core courses and choose a further two.
Doing a PhD
Your Master of Information Management may not involve enough research to qualify you to apply for PhD study. Talk to your programme director to find out what extra study you'll need to do to qualify.
