Develop skills and knowledge in globalisation, development, democracies, processes of state formation, international organisations, theories of international relations, international political economy and security, global environmental politics, and Asia-Pacific and Northeast Asian politics. You will also gain broad-based training in regional studies and comparative politics.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences supports and pursues the University's goal of excellence in research, encouraging research of national and international standing, and identifying and enhancing fields of basic, strategic and applied research. To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Admission to candidature for the Master of International Studies (2 year full time) requires:
A bachelor’s degree with a minimum credit (65 percent) average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification
Candidates may apply for a Reduced Volume of Learning (RVL) if they have completed the embedded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in International Studies or if they have an Honours degree in a relevant discipline.
Candidates may also apply for a Reduced Volume of Learning (RVL) if they have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum credit average including a major in humanities, social sciences or law. Candidates with relevant work experience may also apply for RVL. The duration and relevance of the work experience will be assessed by the department before RVL is granted.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing
