Graduates will be able to demonstrate a broad range of fundamental theoretical, practical and technical music skills. They will be able to participate in group performances and understand the operation of recording systems. Graduates will have a basic knowledge of music theory and aural recognition.
Course Content
CCM101 Theory
People credited with this paper are able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamental theoretical concepts of music; apply and transfer these concepts to practical situations; and transcribe from aural dictation, melody, rhythm, and harmony.
CCM102 Ensemble
People credited with this paper are able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of working with other musicians in a group practical performance; investigate and apply different playing techniques appropriate to selected pieces and group level ability; understand and interpret group dynamics in a personal context; present and apply such personal qualities as leadership, organisational ability, clarity of communication as may be required in a performance situation; investigate, explain and transcribe existing musical compositions as performed by recognised artists from different genres.
CCM103 Practical Major
People credited with this paper are able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of melody rhythm, harmony scales and sight reading, in a practical musical context; analyse and apply different playing techniques appropriate to selected pieces; understand and interpret the pieces in a performance context.
CCM104 Audio Production
People credited with this paper are able to: demonstrate knowledge and explain noise and noise reduction techniques; demonstrate knowledge of terms relating to poor sound quality and gain structure; demonstrate knowledge of techniques used in relation to sound quality and terminology of tape recording; understand and describe the operation of public address and recording systems; understand, describe and apply knowledge in the operation of a MIDI system for a performing arts situation.
CCM106 Musicology
People credited with this paper are able to: demonstrate knowledge and compare the construction and form of selected pieces of music; compare pieces of music in a similar genre in a musical context; investigate and discuss the social and historical contexts in which the music pieces were composed; apply compositional techniques to personal creative work in a musical context.
CCM107 Composition
Career Opportunities
This certificate will equip students with a level of knowledge, skills and competence in music to provide a pathway to further education and training, and the skills to meet specific industry profiles for people entering the workforce as musicians or other members of the music industry.
This programme leads to further study, such as SIT's Bachelor of Contemporary Music.
Satisfactory Completion
For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and be eligible for award of the qualification, Certificate in Intermediate Contemporary Music, they must have: Attended for not less than 80% of the timetabled class hours and other scheduled class activities relating to the programme and have demonstrated competence in the assessed programme local modules relating to the programme (120 credits).

Students must be a minimum of 17 years at the start of their course and ideally have NCEA Level 2 or equivalent.
Mature Applicants
Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme.

IELTS test General or Academic Score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) Score of 500 with an essay score of 4 TWE
TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) Score of 35 with a writing score of 14
Cambridge English Examinations FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 for each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
Pearson Test of English (Academic) PToE (Academic) score of 36
City and Guilds IESOL B1 Achiever with a score of 43
